Dedicated Server

Build, scene composition, startup and persistence behavior for dedicated servers.

On this page

Dedicated server support uses the same gameplay scenes while stripping client-only presentation from the server process. There is no separate server-only gameplay implementation to maintain.

Build and startup#

  • Use Unity's Dedicated Server build target/package for the intended server platform.
  • UNITY_SERVER is supplied by the build target. No custom framework scripting define is required.
  • NetworkBootstrap can also recognize explicit -server startup.
  • The server configures its listen address/port and calls NGO StartServer().

Scene composition#

DedicatedServerSceneComposition disables assigned client-only roots before they initialize. Typical entries are cameras, EventSystem, HUD, minimap, connect UI, chat/context menus, presentation overlays, audio presentation, and client input.

Keep shared gameplay alive. Do not place TickManager, GridManager, TilePathService, NetworkManager, player/NPC spawners, interaction authority, or persistence services in the client-only disable list.

Saving and shutdown#

The server owns ServerCharacterPersistence. During shutdown it captures each registered character before despawn and waits for pending writes through the bootstrap shutdown path. If you add persistent systems, register them as save modules rather than writing local client files.

Networking configuration#

The bundled NetworkLaunchConfig.asset contains project-specific host, port, WebSocket, and status values. Treat those as example/current Green Cloak Games deployment values, not universal package defaults. Replace them for your own deployment.

Deployment scope#

Docker files, cloud orchestration, database hosting, patching, metrics, moderation, and a production identity service are not part of the framework. Core RPG provides the Unity server runtime and gameplay architecture; deployment infrastructure remains project-specific.
